If only it never rained …. If only children could sit and read a book, just for a bit…. Well, until either of the above happens there will always be days where we need a core set of rainy day indoor games.
To keep parents sane rainy day indoor games need to be simple, quick to get out, quick to put away when the kids bored, and preferably a bit of fun for us as well.
Snap: One of the simplest rainy day indoor games.
Buying Rainy Day Indoor Games.
If you have just discovered the need for rainy day indoor games and you need a quick fix for next time then there are a few games you can get which are quite inexpensive and will form a good base for your collection. The first and obvious of rainy day indoor games has got to be snap. This may not initially keep your toddler occupied for a very long time, but is great for getting through the times while the bath is running, the food is cooking, those sort of times when you don’t want get out something which your child will just be getting interested in when the time you needed to fill is up. As they play the game more the time they can concentrate on it will increase. Depending on the age of your child you can get different rainy day indoor games out of one packet of snap cards. When you buy the cards get ones with simple pictures on. Sometimes children find it hard to loose at snap, but with practice this will pass. In the mean time when you think they are getting frustrated then change the game. The second game you can play is pretending to be the animal on the card and the other person has to guess what you are – this is why snap cards with a picture of a bulldozer may not be as good as animals! If your child is just learning their letters then here is one of the funny rainy day indoor games. You will probably already have the alphabet on the wall or on a chart you can roll out – put this on the floor or wall so that your child can point to the letters. Draw a card from the pack and you pretend to be that animal, once you child has guessed the animal they then have to find the first letter of the word on the chart. If they get the letter right then they get a sweet. You may need to keep up their morale by choosing animals starting in letters which you know that they already know! This is fun because as they start to understand the letters you will find that new words are invented. As you crawl around the floor barking and they say ‘dog’ they then perhaps point to a ‘b’ on the chart, and you have to tell them what the word would be i.e. ‘bog’ and keep pretending to be a dog until they get it right. Once you child has got the idea they can make you slither on the floor like a snake for a long time while they intentionally miss the‘s’!
Rainy Day Indoor Games For The Really Adventurous ….
We have all made butterfly paint pictures (the ones where you paint on one side of the page and then fold the paper in half to get the same picture on the other side). Well, if you do this with card and then cut it in half you can make your own snap cards. As rainy day indoor games go, you can make the game in the morning and play with it in the afternoon … not bad for some card, paint and a bit of mess. Depending on your child’s ability you can practice colours when making your snap cards, or shapes. Again sweet rewards are always a good idea – perhaps every time they draw the shape you ask for?
