As parents we all know the recipe for Playdoh by heart, but is there a Moon Sand recipe which we will all soon have added to our repertoire (and will we be able to get the Moon Sand ingredients and make it in our homes)!
The Moon Sand recipe creates a sand, which on touching forms into a type of dough. It is soft to touch, but feels wet on your hands!
The Moon Sand recipe is not something which can easily be found on the internet. Many of you will be looking for this in order to understand its safety, especially if you have children with allergies.
Moon Sand is made by a company called Spinmaster. According to the Spinmaster website the Moon Sand recipe and the Moon Sand ingredients do not contain the following: wheat, gluten, milk, egg, casein or peanut, so Moon Sand is allergen free. The Moon Sand recipe has been submitted to the Info Tox International Inc, this organization have checked the moon sand recipe and resulting moon sand against the requirements of National Toxicology Program, International Agencies for Research on Cancer and National Library of Medicine Bank. The Moon Sand recipe was checked against all this information to establish if there were requirements for hazardous markings on the Moon Sand. The findings were that the Moon Sand recipe (as submitted in 2003) did not require any additional safely labeling in accordance with the Consumer Products Safety Commissions Regulations.
If the Moon Sand recipe is changed then it is necessary for the commission to review the new product. If there is no change in the Moon Sand recipe then it will still need to be submitted after five years to ensure that it still complies. This is an important submission as even if the Moon Sand recipe does not change the safety standards may and this submission will mean that parents can safely continue to use the product without concerns.
Spinmaster advise that all the Moon Sand ingredients in their Moon Sand recipe are inert and cannot be absorbed by the body. Since all the Moon Sand ingredients are inert it can be cleaned with any ‘safe household cleaner’.
As the Moon Sand ingredients of the Moon Sand recipe are inert, it does not react to anything it will come into contact with, hence its life span (if correctly looked after and not contaminated) will be endless.
As to obtaining the Moon Sand recipe, I think it will be awhile before any parent is knocking this up in the kitchen! Moon Sand is in short supply in the shops this Christmas and if you are one of the parents who will not be able to find any for stockings you are best to ensure that you have all the Playdoh ingredients you could need. Perhaps next year the shops will be more prepared, research on the internet seems to imply that this is the second Christmas where Moon Sand will be demanded from Santa and not delivered! Hopefully Santas elves will get hold of the Moon Sand ingredients and recipe and all our stockings will be filled with Moon Sand next festive season.
Enjoy a happy holiday and safe playing with all the family.
