Toddlers can sometimes appear to have almost no attention span at all, but do not despair. Successful activities for preschool do exist and here we hope to introduce you to the best way to manage these.

Before you start an activity you need to create an environment in which your toddler will flourish. Activities for preschool need to be short and without outside distractions.

Prepare The Area

Activities for preschool have to come in several stages, the first is tidy up time. This needs to be done in order to remove the distraction of other toys. It is best to turn off the television or radio and do this together, for example, ‘I’ll put the green car away, you put the blue one in the box’. Once this is complete it is probably worth rewarding your toddler with a treat.

Explain The Activity

A description of what you are about to do is essential for all activities for preschool toddlers. If you do not explain the process, they will either be bored before you have got the activity started or they will start to play with the first thing you put out and the activity will never happen in the planned form. (If you activity does completely change do not despair, follow your childs lead and the two of you may create a new activity which you would not have thought of:)

Third And Optional Stage

Ideally the third part of all activities for preschool should be to tidy up the activity, this will not always work, so don’t get too stressed by it and if it happens remember to reward your toddler for their help.

If you are just starting organized activities for your toddler start by keeping it very simple. If you have a boy who likes cars, try getting out a deck of playing cards and using these to form a track around the area which you have cleared and then simply race your Dinky cars around it. Of course you can use a shop bought track, but by improvising in this way it will encourage their imagination and they will show you their ideas which you may never have thought of; they may put a lake right next to the track which is full of crocodiles or monsters! Also if it is a deck playing cards there is no wrong way to put them together, but a toddler can get easily frustrated when building a track and finding that it doesn’t go where they want it to.

Activities for preschool should be fun. If you are getting stressed by it you may have started off with too high an expectation. So long as your toddler is playing with the desired toy in the defined area it is a success! With time the activities for preschool can become more structured, but you need to build up to this.
